Let Freedom Ring Concert

Patriotic Concert to Feature Choir, Handbells and Instrumentalists

Outer Banks Presbyterian Church will celebrate America’s independence with a musical presentation Sunday, July 4 at 5 p.m.

Featured will be the sanctuary choir, Jubilate Handbell Ringers, guest singers and musicians. Musical Director, Jason Evans and Guest Conductor, Ken Clifton, will be coordinating all these groups. The program, which is in four parts, will begin with a prelude of patriotic selections by the Jubilate Handbell Ringers. After the presentation of colors by the American Legion Fort Raleigh Post 26 Color Guard, the National Anthem and a selection of favorite patriotic hymns will follow.

The next segment, Celebrating our Nation and Remembering our Heroes, will include a tribute to our nation through song, a Salute to the Armed Forces and a remembrance of our Heroes, both active and those who have given their lives in service of our Country. The third segment, Celebrating our Freedom of Worship, will call homage to various ways of worship throughout Christendom and help us to recall that we may all worship differently, but we are all striving to serve one Lord.

The final portion of the program, No Matter What, God is With Us, is designed to remind us, through song, that even in these uncertain times in our nation, economy and world, that God is with us and will never leave us!

The program will close with God Bless the U.S.A and God, Bless America. Soloists Shannah Noble, Pamela Tanner, Beth Rice, Brian Hare, Patrice White-Taylor Welch, Lauren Taylor, Donna Thomas and Billy Tanner as well as musicians, Jason Evans, pianist, Steve Blackstock, organist, Dave Thomas, bass guitarist, John Cooke, drummer and Meg Rice on the piccolo/flute will join with the choir of OBPC in making this an evening to remember!

The stirring program will be followed by an "old fashioned" cook out on the grounds. The community is cordially invited to attend. A nursery will be provided on site. Sue's Story - The Inspiration Behind Faith, Family and Friends

Sue, the mother of two teenage sons, was diagnosed with MS in 2001. She had problems emotionally and physically.

She sought financial help from Social Security but did not qualify for Assistance. She struggled along until 2004 when she applied again for aid and was granted an interview in 2008 – four years later. When asked what she wanted from Social Security she said, “Nothing – just listen to my story.”

She then told them about her physical, emotional and financial difficulties due to the MS – how her family had intervened when she took too many prescription drugs.

The Social Security representative asked how she had overcome the MS. Sue replied, “You don’t overcome MS – you learn to live with it and I can sum it up with three words – Faith, Family and Friends.”

There are no income restrictions or applications to complete. We accept debit and credit cards through the website. Cash money orders (made out to Outer Banks Presbyterian Church) and food stamps/EBT cards are accepted through our Church Office on Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. and Thursdays 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

As a young parent, do you ever feel you need a relaxing night out and feel comfortable that your children are safe and receiving good care without the expense of a babysitter?

As a young family or young parent, do you want some personal time to “rekindle,” go out to dinner, go shopping, go to a movie, or just go back home to relax?

Outer Banks Presbyterian Church is offering a Parents’ Night Out as a free gift to the community. You do not have to attend the church or any church to participate. All young families and parents are welcome.

Participate during any or all of these dates:

Friday, June 25 - 6 to 9 p.m.

Friday, September 24 - 6 to 9 p.m.

Kids help prepare their snacks with the supervision of an adult volunteer. In February, the snack was Apple Berry Salsa with Cinammon Chips.

There is a nursery for the youngest participants in Parents Night Out!

Children will be grouped according to age and will be closely supervised by experienced adults and assisted by experienced teenage babysitters. Children ages three years to fifth grade are welcome, and children older than fifth grade may come as helpers. There will be a nursery available for younger children. All age groups will have fun participating in various activity stations. There will be a hands-on activity station, an age appropriate interactive bible based story-time and group discussion station, a snack station where the children will actually help make the snacks related to that night’s topic, and a team building game or physical activities station. The children will rotate according to age groups through the various stations. Every month, the stations will have a topic that will be planned by the Parents’ Night Out Director Michele Albright, a certified public school teacher, who is the mother of two young children herself. Albright is youth director at Outer Banks Presbyterian Church and also works as nursery caregiver during Sunday worship services. When parents and children arrive, Albright will greet the children and introduce them to their age groups and various activity stations. After a five-minute introduction and orientation, parents simply leave and do whatever they have planned for themselves, returning no later than 9:30 p.m. to pick up their children. Everyone is strongly encouraged to pre-registered; space is limited. Once the limit is reached, no one else may register. If space is available you may register that day. Please call the church office to check availability. Registration forms can be obtained here , by emailing obpc@earthlink.net, or by calling the church office at 252-441-5897. The number of children will be limited to ensure the safety of the children, and the church will be locked during each event. Parents will need to bring a picture ID when picking up their children.

30th Anniversary Celebration

The Outer Banks Presbyterian Church celebrated our 30th Anniversary on Sunday, September 20, 2009.

On Saturday, September 19, we had an evening of old-time hymn favorites at 7 p.m., followed by an ice cream social.

The celebration on September 20 included a special worship service at 10 a.m., during which we reflected on the growth of the church from a seasonal place of worship to a functioning Presbyterian Church USA, as well as recognized the many years of service of Spottswood Graves. A luncheon was served at the church after the service.

Celebrate the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus

The Music Ministry of the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church will present “Jesus, Messiah”, a musical on the life of Christ on Saturday and Sunday, March 27 and 28, 2010 at 7:00 pm

This musical presentation will be given by the Sanctuary Choir of the church along with numerous musical guests all combining to build a 54 voice choir, a 13 piece orchestra and narrators to tell the wonderful story of Jesus’ love for us by giving His life on a cross over two thousand years ago. The choir, under the direction of Jason Evans and Nonie Booth, has been working on the musical for weeks.

Guest conductor, Ken Clifton, will direct the choir and orchestra. Clifton’s impressive career includes numerous engagements all around the country as well as time on the Outer Banks as musical director for “The Lost Colony” in Manteo for six summers.

Guest vocalists include; Curtis Campbell, pastor of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, Patrice White-Taylor Welch, Billy and Pam Tanner, Shannah Noble, Maurice Trotman, Jerry Manolas, Beth Rice, Brian Hare and Lisa Martinez.

We invite all to attend this moving and powerful presentation. Admission is free, and a freewill love offering will be taken. Nursery will be provided. Scouts

OBPC has had a long standing relationship with Cub Scout Pack 116 and Boy Scout Troop 116. The youth groups meet weekly in the Fellowship Hall on Mondays at 7:00 PM ( Boy Scouts ) and Tuesdays at 6:30 PM ( Cub Scouts ). A total of twenty-one cub scouts and twenty boy scouts ( see rosters below ) are currently working on a variety of projects that benefit the community and mold them into leaders of tomorrow. Our church is proud to sponsor these youth and look forward to strengthening the bonds between the youth and our congregation.

REQUIREMENTS FOR MERIT BADGE COUNSELORS

To qualify as a Merit Badge Counselor, you must:
Be at least 18 years old.
Be proficient in the merit badge subject by vocation, avocation, or special training. (see below)
Be able to work with Scout-age boys.
Be registered with the Boy Scouts of America
Complete and submit the BSA Merit Badge Counselor Information Form (No. 33405), indicating which Merit badges you wish to counsel.
As a Merit Badge Counselor, you must agree to:
Follow the requirements of the merit badge, making no deletions or additions, ensuring that the advancement standards are fair and uniform for all Scouts.
Have a Scout and his buddy present at all instructional sessions.
Renew your registration annually if I plan to continue as a Merit Badge Counselor.
When you register as a Merit Badge Counselor, you may choose to work only with a specific unit or units, or with all units.
Proficiency in the subject:
Vocation: Is this subject in line with your job, business, or profession?
Avocation: Do you follow this subject as a hobby, having more than a working knowledge of the requirements?
Special Training: If not, do you have any special training or other qualifications for this subject?

REQUIREMENTS TO REGISTER AS A SCOUTER

For administrative purposes, Boy Scouts of America requires all merit badge counselors to register with their local council, by submitting an Adult Registration Application, No. 28-501. If you are registering solely to serve as a merit badge counselor, there is no fee. You may also become a full member of the Boy Scouts of America by paying the $10.00 annual registration fee, which includes a subscription to Scouting magazine. This bimonthly publication will keep you updated on developments in the merit badge program and many other aspects of Scouting.. Simply call or write your local council (most of them are listed in your telephone directory under "Boy Scouts of America"). Please note that when registering as an adult member of BSA, you must authorize a criminal background check of yourself, which will be made from public records.

A Word from the Pastor

Our beloved Jack Dempsey's favorite poem was The Children's Hour, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It is that dear children's poem where we get that expression, 'patter of little feet.' I include it because the presence of children is moving, warming and precious.

The poem reminded me of what I heard John Maycomber tell me over the phone shortly before he died. John's prayer and hope was that we would continue the Master's calling of chidlren into Christ's sheepfold.

The poem reminded me of what I have heard from church specialists over many years now - a healthy church enfolds the lambs (as well as tends the grown sheep. It's never either one or the other. Never.)

I believe every church is like a ship...when we chart our course and leave the bank, God will provide the wind for our sails. I believe that as we carefully pull together we can be a church on the OBX that meets the needs of all ages.

I feel we are in a tremedous position. We have you. We have your prayers. We have your indomitable spirit, your friendlienss and your support. We can enjoy the patter of little feet and enjoy all the sacrifices made to welcome them among us. Service can inspire. Outreach has it's own reward.

I hope you will pray for the patter of little feet at OBX Presbyterian. Our master had some people to train once. "Then little children were being brought to him in order that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples spoke sternly to those who brought them; but Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.' And he laid his hands on them and went on his way." (Matthew 19:13-15)

The Sanctuary Choir

The Sanctuary Choir is a vital part of our Music Ministry at Outer Banks Presbyterian Church. The choir is made up of a group of 25-30 volunteer singers and presents special music at our Morning Worship Services. In addition to the regular worship services, the Sanctuary Choir presents 4 Major musical presentations per year: "The Promise" (Easter), "Let Freedom Ring" (Patriotic), Our Annual Music Sunday, and "Christmas at Outer Banks Presbyterian". The Sanctuary Choir also provides special music at our Maundy Thursday Communion Service and our Christmas Eve Worship Service.

We welcome any and all to come and join us. Our rehearsals are on Wednesday Evenings from 7 pm-8:15 pm and on Sunday Mornings from 9:15 am-9:35 am. For more information on the Sanctuary Choir, please contact Jason Evans or Nonie Booth.

The Jubilate Ringers (Handbell Choir)

The Jubilate Ringers is our Handbell Choir. This group of 12 ringers presents music not only on various Sunday Mornings throughout the church year, but also during special presentations, such as "Let Freedom Ring", "Music Sunday" and during the Christmas Season. The handbell choir always welcomes additional ringers! We rehearse on Wednesday Evenings from 6:00-6:45 pm in the Sanctuary. Please join us! A New Organ for Our Church!

In the fall of 2007, our church began investigating the possibility of the purchase of a new organ for our sanctuary due to mechanical failures of the old organ. Through the extreme generosity of our congregants, we quickly raised the money to purchase a new organ and a contract was signed in the Spring of 2008 with the Rodgers Organ Company. Our new organ arrived the day after our 2008 "Let Freedom Ring" concert in July and has been bringing glorious music to all who have heard it! The new organ is a Rodgers Trillium Masterpiece 928. The organ console has 3-manuals, drawknobs and pedals with Rosewood Sharps and Ivora Naturals, and a 2-tone wood console. The dedicatory recital was held on Sunday Morning, July 27, 2008 and was led by our church's organist, Jason Evans. Two other organ concerts were held in our dedicatory series. The first was on August 10, 2008 by Mr. Monty Bennet and the second was on September 21, 2008 and was played by Mr. Corey Powell!

2010 Special Musical Presentations

Christopher Wren Singers: Sunday, February 28, 2010 at 3:00 pm

The Christopher Wren Singers are William and Mary's oldest student directed a cappella group, dating back to 1987. They perform throughout the year for various on campus events, in addition to their Winter and Spring concerts. They also tour in the Spring each year. The group specializes in madrigal and renaissance music, although we also sing a few ballads and contemporary pieces. The concert will feature music from Mendelssohn, Palestrina, and Lauridsen as well as other pieces.

Let Freedom Ring: Sunday, July 4, 2010 at 5:30 pm

Let Freedom Ring was such a huge success in 2008, we are going to do it again. This concert is free and open to the public. Also, we welcome and and all guest singers that would like to join in singing with our choir to do so. Plan to join us as we celebrate the Godly heritage that our country was founded on and also as we give thanks to our Military! A church-wide cookoutwill follow the concert, and all are invited to attend! Sunday School at Outer Banks Presbyterian Church is open to all ages, from pre-school through high school, and for young adults and seniors.

Classes begin at 9:00 AM and are held in the classrooms just beyond the gathering space, also known as the multi-purpose area.

Presbyterian Women

Purpose: To nurture faith through prayer and Bible study, to support the mission of the church worldwide, to work for justice and peace, and to build a caring community of women.

History: The Outer Banks chapter of Presbyterian Women began in 1983 and has continued, uninterrupted, to serve the women of this church and the community.

There are two circles that meet once a month in members’ homes:

There are joint luncheon gatherings in September, February and June.

What To Expect: Meetings begin and end with laughter, camaraderie, and chatting. This social time binds us in sisterhood. After the mingling, we settle into prayer and raise up our concerns for our church family. Each year Horizons provides a thematic Bible study. After completing the lesson, we hold our business meeting where we discuss our work in the church or community. Presbyterian Women operates independently from the church budget and is funded through nominal monthly donations to the circles. The money collected from the mission goes to serve unique projects within the United States and the World. Each year Horizons Magazine publishes a list of all the recipients of funds from the donations.

Every year Presbyterian Women honors one of its elder and faithful servants with the title, “Honorary Life Member.” This prestigious title comes with a framed certificate and a pin.

The "Out-to-Lunch Bunch"

We welcome you!

We are a group that joins on the first Wednesday of every month, from October through May. The FREE lunch is served and enjoyed in the church fellowship hall at 12:30 PM on those once-a-month Wednesdays. The dress is casual and the setting is very informal and relaxed. It does not matter if you miss a few or only come once! We are so happy to have you whenever you can come!

Programs following lunch are geared for fun and fellowship. Nothing deep or heavy is intended nor planned. In the past, speakers have been invited, and occasionally a member or members of the congregation have told of unique life experiences. Sometimes there are even games!

A variety of foods are served. On any particular occasion you may be served soup and sandwich, salads, hot dogs, hamburgers, or whatever Corinne feels the attendees will enjoy!
Yes, it’s free, but donations are accepted as a means of supplementing the monetary cost.

Would you even like to volunteer? If you would like to help in any way, either on just one occasion or for every time it is held, please call the church office!

We invite people to enter into membership with us. The Session receives members into a Presbyterian Church in three ways:

• Public acknowledgment of Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior
• Transfer by certificate of membership from another Christian Church, or
• Reaffirmation of Faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior

We will be happy to talk with you about your personal faith, membership in our congregation and answer your questions about our church.
